It’s April Fool’s Day, here are the best gaming gags we’ve seen

The April Fool’s joke seems to be loved and loathed almost equally these days, but when done well, it can at least give us food for thought “huh, it would be cool if that was real” Or even elicit a smile.

We’ve looked at quite a few Nintendo- and gaming-themed pranks this year, and there’s a decent selection of both. Lots to make you roll your eyes to infinity, but some good ones too!

All of the below have a link to Nintendo games, so let’s get to that.

We’ll update this list with more throughout the day…

The best April Fool’s Day video game gags of 2022

The Switch ‘Stacker’ – Vooks

Change stacker 1

This was one of the first to appear this year, courtesy of Vooks, which gets away with being “early” due to time zones and being based in Australia. It’s definitely a good one, with a decent mockup and a concept that would actually be pretty nifty if it existed. The idea is that with a new dock, you can pop in up to 12 game cartridges at once and then easily switch between them on the Switch. It’s more like an old-school CD changer, but better.

It’s not an entirely practical idea, but it’s one we do wish was on the cards.

Sonic Frontiers Limited Edition by SEGA –

Sonic Frontiers April 1st

We noticed this thanks @Nibellion on Twitter, with the actual “product page” showing an impressive effort. The joke is probably that it’s not unthinkable for the meme-obsessed Sonic marketing team to actually have an issue like this for Sonic Frontiers – it has a “premium” bathtub, a silk towel, a waterproof Mega Drive, a Game Gear ( cannot be used in water) and a duck.

Hey, we would consider buying it.

The Nintendo ‘Flex’ – @Retro_Dodo

This is another product that would actually be pretty cool. The pitch is that Nintendo introduces the “Flex” to address the challenge of the popular Analogue Pocket. It would play Game Boy/Game Boy Color/Game Boy Advance cartridges, connect online for trades and downloads, have a fingerprint reader (for some reason) and wireless charging. It’s fun and kudos to the design.

Yes, we would consider that too.

The Convertible Monitor from Bearitron –

This is a site that actually sells cases to make modern monitors look like old CRTs just because some of us are old and can’t let go. This April Fool’s joke goes beyond a mere “case” and has a magical (fake) technology of a “flexible” screen. It features an imaginative “mechanism that allows the monitor to transition from a completely flat screen to the Trinitron’s iconic barrel shape,” dubbed the “Bearitron.”

Development of new blood games ‘delayed’ until 2023.

New Blood Games brought us the rather fantastic Dusk on Switch last year and is definitely a publisher and developer to check out. Its gag was that it had to postpone all of its development work until next year because its team was too busy playing the game elden ring. While it’s a decent joke, we suspect some people in the real world are letting the actual work slide while playing FromSoftware’s hugely hyped title.

We also like the “announcement posted to Twitter” format – CD Projekt Red has a lot to answer for.

These are some of the larks from this year’s April Fools’ Day celebrations; Make sure to share some of your favorites in the comments – we’ll be adding to the above throughout the day. If even more really good ones appear, that is. It’s April Fool’s Day, here are the best gaming gags we’ve seen
