‘It’s going to be a tough fight’ – Eric Donovan insists Katie Taylor faces Amanda Serrano in the toughest fight of her career

Eric Donovan, who trained with Katie Taylor prior to her 2012 Olympic gold medal win, believes the undefeated world champion faces the biggest challenge of her career in two and a half weeks against Amanda Serrano.

The Bray lightweight defends on June 30.

Donovan, his wife and three other close friends will be at the arena to support his former Irish team-mate.

“Going to a big fight in America has always been on my to-do list. I never thought it would be a female main event. But I’m happy that it will be the only Katie.”

Donovan didn’t get the call on that occasion to travel to Connecticut to train with Taylor before the competition. However, the Taylor camp brought two boxers over from Ireland to share the ring with Taylor – Amy Broadhurst and more recently Myles Casey from Limerick.

“I used Myles myself; He’s a southpaw, he’s smart, smart and a puncher. Katie had to respect his power and I think Serrano will have power too.”

Serrano, a seven-weight world champion, also boxes from a southpaw stance, and Donovan pointed out that Taylor’s toughest fights have been against southpaw opponents.

“It’s going to be a tough fight,” Donovan suggests. “(Sofya) Ochigava, the Russian she beat in the 2012 Olympic final, was a southpaw.

“I was at a training camp in Italy before the Olympics to help Katie prepare for Ochigava because she was the big threat to her gold medal. We know how close the Olympic final was.

“Serrano will be very smart. But I don’t think Serrano faces the same resistance as Katie. She’s a quality operator, but she hasn’t operated at a high level in quite some time. It hasn’t been tested, but that might not be a bad thing – it may mean it’s fresh.

“Katie has been in a lot of tough fights lately, especially the two fights against Define Persoon. A professional boxing match takes something away from you every time, whether it’s energy or a bit of timing,” said the Athy boxer.

“Hopefully Katie makes it. Sometimes in boxing – we saw it with Carl Frampton, he just got old overnight fighting Jamel Herring. As a fighter, you just don’t know when the time is up.

“I had the best of intentions for my last fight against (Robeisy) Ramirez. I’ve been training hard; I busted my ass. I really believed that I would win the fight. But if I didn’t win I would give him a good run for the money.

“My least expectation was to go the distance. And I ended up getting stopped on the third lap and I was like, “What the hell happened here?”. But look, this is boxing.”

Donovan returns to the ring in Belfast next month and is hoping this will be a warm-up fight before he gets a shot at securing a European title. But he will have at most three more competitions before hanging up his gloves.
