It’s ‘terrifying’ to bring Star Trek’s Borg Queen to TV

On TV, “Star Trek” tends to – in general – lean more towards moral dilemmas and ethical discussions. Each “Trek” brings together groups of determined, mature, clear-minded individuals and brings them into the boardroom and around the table to discuss the possibilities. “Trek” is best when it says a lot. In contrast, the “Trek” movies tend to be very action-packed, featuring staunch “villains” who the “good guys” will merely have to fight. And Queen Borg is a villain in the movie. She is able to read the minds of both Picard and Data (Brent Spiner), and tries to lure them both into the collective, persuading them to join their own actions. Later, in the episode “Voyager”, Krige uses the same metallic, glittery seduction technique on Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) and Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan).

Krige admits that the Queen, as a character, is something of a natural, beginning with her usual polygamy, a term Krige acknowledged in her interview with Sen. AV club, she was not familiar with at first. She was also concerned that the character’s overwhelming presence might not be suitable for American network television:

“Honestly, changing media, going from a big screen to a television screen is scary. I thought to myself, ‘Will she still work in this tiny space?’ Two nights ago I realized I was working with two women, not two men. I called the producer and said, ‘She’s working with two women.’ He said, “Don’t worry. Consider her asexual.” And I thought, ‘Okay.’ It wasn’t until later that I realized I didn’t know what an omnivore is.”

In the future, with so many species and genders in the galaxy, one must become asexual.
