It looks like Bumper is finally catching on to YouTube’s capella video trend of the early 2010s, most notably by groups like Pentatonix. He set up the camera to shoot his first video vlog, complete with a poorly blurred background, before diving into mashup covers of Nena’s “99 Luftballoons” and A-ha’s “Take On Me.” Gives Devine the ability to record seven different versions of herself, all with different performance styles, which is pretty fun, but a clear reference to a YouTube style that hasn’t been popular for nearly a decade are some excellent commentary on how Bumper’s character is constantly being out of reach.
To be fair, he totally nailed it, right from the German pronunciation of Nena’s hit single. As for the teaser trailer for a series about the singers, “Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin” hits all the right notes. While the trailer only shows Bumper in all his fame-seeking glories, Devine will join a killer lineup that includes the return of “Pitch Perfect 2” star Flula Borg, “Modern Family” stars Sarah Hyland, Jameela Jamil of “The Good Place” and She-Hulk: Famous Lawyer, and newcomer Lera Abova. Directors include Todd Strauss-Schulson (“It’s Not Romantic”), Richie Keen (“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), and Maureen Bharoocha (“Saved by The Bell”).
“Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin” premieres on Peacock on November 23, 2022.
