ITV This Morning’s doctor warns of hand, foot and mouth disease this summer

A doctor warned of a “highly contagious” Summer Infection that commonly affects children, but adults can also be affected.

Speaking of This morningdr Sara Kayat appeared on Monday’s episode of the show to share the warning with viewers.

she explained Hand Foot Mouth Disease is common in the summer months as children share towels to dry off.

She said: “It affects the hands, feet and mouth as it suggests, but it can also affect the buttocks and other parts of the body.

It can affect as well [children] eat and drink, so it’s all about giving them a supportive treatment in the form of gels in their mouth or a tasty lolly pop to cool them down.”

She spoke to Dermot O’Leary and Alison Hammond, standing in for Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby.

Dermot revealed his son Kasper had previously contracted the disease and said it went away on its own.

dr Sara agreed, “Yes it goes by itself, it’s contagious, but most kids and most adults have had it at some point.”

Symptoms of hand, foot and mouth disease

According to that NHS websiteThree early signs of hand, foot and mouth disease are:

  • Sore throat
  • A high temperature
  • Don’t want to eat

After a few days, mouth ulcers and a rash appear. Symptoms in children and adults are largely the same, but can be worse in babies and children under the age of five.
