ITVBe (and formerly ITV2) have aired Christmas shows every year for the past 12 years, with the festive episodes becoming a bit of a tradition.
The only time a TOWIE festival show was not aired was Christmas 2018.
TOWIE Christmas special canceled by ITV
The Sun has reported that ITV has no plans for a 2022 special, but it hasn’t been officially scrapped by the channel as of yet.
A source told The Sun: “The cast were blown away by the news as Towie’s Christmas specials are something of a tradition so none of them were expecting not to be filming this time around…
“They were all told that the planning didn’t work out and that the budget will be spent on other things, but it has made them all very nervous about the future of the show.
“It doesn’t bode well for the show in general when bosses have decided that filming the celebratory one-off doesn’t make financial sense…
“A lot of them rely on the Christmas special for extra work and also because it helps maintain their profile as the regular show doesn’t air as often throughout the year.”
The news comes as ITV prepares for launch new streaming platform ITVX.
The “first integrated ad- and subscription-funded platform” is slated to go live in November.
The Only Way Is Essex is available on the ITV Hub.
