A football star has revealed he was racially abused after Friday night’s game in Brighton.
Brentford striker Ivan Toney tweeted with screenshots from his Instagram account of messages from a man calling him a “black c***”.
The tweet, sent out the morning after Toney scored both goals as Albion lost 2-0 to Brentford, drew condemnation from his club.
In his tweet, Toney wrote, “I didn’t even mean to post this but I woke up angry,” alongside screenshots of the message sent to him.
A statement from Brentford said: “Last night Ivan Toney was subjected to disgusting, racist abuse via a direct message on social media.
CLUB STATEMENT: Ivan Toney
— Brentford FC (@BrentfordFC) October 15, 2022
“We condemn this discriminatory behavior in the strongest possible terms. An attack on one of our players is an attack on all of us.
“Ivan will have the full support of the club and Brentford fans who have already condemned the abuse.”
The club says it expects strong support from the police and Instagram’s parent company Meta.
The Premier League also issued a statement condemning the abuse as “no place in football or society” and adding that they would support investigations.
