WASHINGTON – Former President Donald Trump’s two eldest children, Donald Trump Jr. and Ivanka Trump, have testified against the Trump organization in New York Attorney General Letitia James’ investigation into civil tax fraud, two sources close to the investigation said. NBC News on Thursday with.
Trump Jr., the company’s executive vice president, testified in the case last week and Ivanka, a former executive, testified on Wednesday, the sources said. Neither of them invoked the Fifth Amendment’s protection from self-incrimination.
The sources did not confirm whether their testimony was in person or virtually.
The civil investigation stems from allegations that Trump and the Trump Organization inflated the financial statements.
A New York appeals court in May rejected an attempt by the Trump family to block subpoenas for their testimony. A panel of judges from the Appellate Division, the state’s second highest court, sided with James’ office and declined Trump’s offer to avoid testifying in the inquest.
Trump is expected to speak to investigators in the coming weeks, a source said.
James’ office said in court filings that its investigation “uncovered substantial evidence supporting numerous misstatements in Mr. Trump’s financial statements submitted to banks, insurers and the Internal Revenue Service.”
These statements were inflated by hundreds of millions of dollars and signed by the former president, James claimed.
The company has denied any wrongdoing, and the former president has called the investigation into James a “witch hunt”.
