I’ve converted my Vauxhall so I can live in it instead of paying rent – I save £900 a month and have a kettle

A HEALTHCARE worker has moved into a converted Vauxhall after the cost of living crisis made it ‘impossible’ for him to afford rent.

Gareth Ward, 48, said the move could save him over £900 a month after joining a growing movement of motorhome savers.

Faced with rising bills amid the skyrocketing Cost of Living CrisisGareth said he was struggling to make ends meet while living in a suburban apartment.

The 48-year-old quickly realized he needed to get creative to save his hard-earned cash.

Gareth said he has not only avoided renting his Vauxhall Zafira but has invested in a gym membership so he can still afford a shower without the burden of daily water bills.

He said Norwich Evening News: “I can save and travel when I’m free without rent, heating and water bills.

“On my own I make just over £1,000 a month.

“Rent is £800 for a one-bedroom flat. The tax is more than a hundred, the food goes up and then I have to keep my car.

“Unfortunately, I was ill and had to take a break from work.

“I’m in debt because of that, but I was struggling to keep track of all the bills anyway.

“It feels like it’s almost – if not – impossible to live like that.”

To prepare his engine, the caretaker also installed a mattress and a set of batteries for charging stations.

He plans to use laundromats for his laundry, and when his gym isn’t available, he’s even bought an electric kettle for an impromptu shower.

With his savings, he hopes to be able to make a living from takeout and easy-to-prepare food, adding, “I’m doing this for my sanity as well, and I’m going to have money for myself.”

What support for living expenses can you get?

Across the country, people are feeling the drop in the cost of living as we head into winter.

But there are several ways to help distressed Britons.

Available support offers include £150 for people with disabilities, a £400 energy rebate for 30 million UK households and a £650 cost of living payment expected to help over 1 million families.

The second payment of living expenses is due to hit bank accounts from next week.

The Department for Works and Pensions (DWP) recently confirmed that the payments will take place from November 8th to 23rd.

Pensioners are often feeling the brunt of winter payments more than most – but pensioners’ £300 living expenses payment also officially started hitting bank accounts yesterday

To be entitled to the pensioner’s cost-of-living allowance, the following must apply:

  • You were born on or before September 25, 1956
  • You lived in the UK for at least one day in the week of September 19-25, 2022
