When it hits devices this fall, it will bring with it a host of fresh Siri features for iPhone owners that will make iPhone even easier to use.

While users will have to wait until then to take advantage of these new features, reports from people who downloaded the iOS 16 developer beta have revealed what we can expect from the updated software.

Here are seven new Siri tricks to help you use your iPhone more efficiently, enable shortcuts, or improve dictation, coming soon to an iPhone near you.

1. Dictate emojis while composing messages

Thanks to improved dictation features in iOS 16, Siri can convert voice commands into emojis when composing messages.

For example, say “eggplant emoji” and the icon will magically appear, unlike before when it would confuse the virtual assistant.

The new feature works in both Messages and Mail apps and is complemented by the ability to automatically insert punctuation marks and add periods at the end of sentences as you dictate messages.

2. Use Siri to run shortcuts instantly

Another big upgrade Siri will get is the ability to run shortcuts for an app using Siri voice commands as soon as it’s installed, eliminating the need for users to set up those shortcuts in iOS 16.

For example, if you want to back-order a meal for delivery through a specific grocery delivery app, you can simply ask Siri to “reorder pickup” in that app, and the digital assistant will offer a summary of the order to get yours final approval.

3. Improved transparency about what Siri can do

In previous versions of Apple’s iOS, it wasn’t always clear what exactly Siri was capable of. You would have to find out by asking away and hoping for the best.

iOS 16 fixes this problem. Now if you want to know more about what Siri can do in apps on your iPhone, you can just ask, “Hey Siri, what can I do here?” or ask for a specific app, like “Hey ‌Siri‌”. , What can I do with it? [app name]?” to get a list of possible actions.

4. Control more things with Siri offline

In recent versions of iOS, iPhones are increasingly able to power Siri without the need for an internet connection, such as B. setting alarms and launching apps.

This offline functionality is further expanded with iOS 16, with Siri now able to handle requests for smart home devices via HomeKit, turn on intercom functions, and start voicemail and notifications, all offline.

Note, however, that these features are only supported by the iPhone XS or later.

5. Write SMS more efficiently

A toggle to automatically send messages will be available in iOS 16’s Siri and Search settings.

That means you can quickly send text using voice commands without the digital assistant asking you for confirmation first.

6. New pause function

More of a hidden new iOS 16 feature that only more curious users might stumble across is the addition of a Siri pause time feature.

This lets you customize the amount of time Assistant takes before responding to what you say and is great for those who feel a little rushed when giving their commands to Siri.

7. End a call, hands-free

Previously, Siri could only offer to answer the phone for incoming calls. You were on your own when you hung up.

That changed in iOS 16, where you can ask the smart assistant to hang up on either phone calls or FaceTime sessions.
