‘I’ve had my neighbor’s package for 3 weeks – I’m considering throwing it away’

If you’re not at home when you have a package delivered to your home, it’s not uncommon for the courier to try to hand it over to your neighbors so you can just pick it up when you get home.

But a woman on Mumsnet was left irritated by her neighbors after she agreed to take one of her packages – because they hadn’t been there to collect it for three weeks.

The mother said she refuses to do the legwork to hand it to them as she doesn’t get along with them very well.

Instead, she considers either tossing the package in the bin or sending it back to the sender.

In her post, she said: “I have a package that I picked up for my neighbor as they were outside during delivery. That was three weeks ago!

“This is not the first time it has taken them forever to collect their package. Once before it took them 10 days to collect it and they didn’t even say thank you.

“The courier said that their neighbors on the other side won’t take their packages because they won’t take theirs.

“I know they’re in because I see them going in and out of their house and their car leaving and coming back. So either they have no message that I have their package, they forgot, or they just forgot can’t be arrogant and wait for me to deal with it. They’ve never been very kind to me since I’ve tried them, so I’m less inclined to do the latter.

“What would you do with this package and how long do I need to keep it before either throwing it in the trash (or sending it back to sender)?”

Commenters on the post sympathized with the mother’s point of view, as many of them claimed they also had issues with their neighbors being disrespectful when collecting packages.

But most of them suggested that this time she would deliver the package to them before refusing to accept any more deliveries for them.

One person said: “Take it with you and put it on your step, take a picture, put a note through the door saying you’ve had it for three weeks, can’t take responsibility for their packages and will not accept any more packages then keep your word.”

While another added: “Tag one of them if you see one of them going in and out, give them the package and don’t accept anything else for them.”

And a third wrote: “Throw it on her doorstep and refuse future deliveries. It would be very unreasonable to throw it away.”
