Actor Amber Heard’s lawyers tried to undermine Johnny Depp‘s defamation lawsuit again yesterday, spending hours in court, focusing on the actor’s drinking, drug use and texts he sent to friends – including one about wanting to kill and defile his then-wife .
s Heard’s lawyers cited Mr Depp’s story of vandalizing hotel rooms and smashing a bathroom light fixture during an argument with Ms Heard.
Mr Depp is also facing a lawsuit filed by a member of a film crew alleging he was assaulted in 2018.
Lawyers are trying to derail Mr Depp’s defamation lawsuit against Ms Heard, which alleges she falsely portrayed him as a domestic abuser and ruined his lucrative acting career. They argue that he did in fact abuse Ms Heard both physically and sexually and claim that he cannot deny it because he was often drunk and addicted to drugs until he passed out.
“I naturally punched Amber and showed ugly colors on a recent trip,” Mr Depp said in a July 2013 text message to friend, actor Paul Bettany, shown to jurors.
“I’m a crazy person and I’m not so clairvoyant after too much alcohol,” Mr Depp continued. “Weed, pills… Good!!! Drink??? My capacity is too big and I won’t stop…Ugly and sad…Oh how I love it.”
Ms Heard’s attorney, J Benjamin Rottenborn, also that year focused on another exchange between Mr Depp and Mr Bettany, in which Mr Depp wrote: ‘Let’s burn amber!!!’ Mr Bettany replied: ‘After I got it Having thought this through I don’t think we should burn Amber.” Mr Depp wrote: “Let’s drown her before we burn her!!! I will make her burnt corpse (expressive) afterwards to make sure she is dead.
Mr Depp previously apologized to the jury for the vulgar language in the lyrics, saying: “In the heat of the pain I felt, I went to dark places”.
Rottenborn also showed the jury one of Depp’s lines to Bettany in 2014, in which he referred to whisky, pills and cocaine.
The texts were sent during a period when Depp said he had quit drinking. And they were sent around the time of a private flight from Boston to Los Angeles, on which Heard had said Depp was drunk and assaulted her.

Mr. Rottenborn presented texts Mr. Depp had sent to Mr. Bettany that said he “drank all night before I picked Amber up to fly to LA last Sunday… Ugly, mate… None for days.” Food… powder… Half a bottle of whiskey, a thousand Red Bull and vodkas, pills, 2 bottles of Champers on the plane…”.
Depp previously testified that he took two oxycodone pills – an opiate he admitted was addicted to at the time – and locked himself in the plane’s bathroom and fell asleep to escape their anger.
He also denies that he was drunk on the flight and said he only had a glass of champagne when he boarded the plane.
But Mr Rottenborn also showed the jury Mr Depp’s post-flight remorse. “I find myself once again in a place of shame and regret,” Mr. Depp wrote to Heard. “Of course I’m sorry. I really don’t know why or what happened. But I will never do it again… My illness somehow crept in and got hold of me… I need to get well. And I will. For both of us. Start today. I love you. Again, I’m so sorry. So sorry.”
To further challenge Mr Depp’s claim that he was not a problem drinker at the time, Ms Heard’s attorney showed the jury a text Mr Depp sent to musician Patti Smith regarding a visit to New York in 2014 in which he recounted fights with Frau Heard, getting drunk and being “so disappointed in myself”.
Mr. Depp has been on the witness stand in Fairfax County Circuit Court since Tuesday afternoon. The actor has spent much time describing the couple’s volatile relationship and denying he ever abused Ms Heard. Mr Depp said Ms Heard often violently assaulted him. And he argued that his film career suffered after she wrote a comment in 2018 The Washington Postwhich led to his defamation lawsuit against Ms Heard.
Ms Heard never mentioned Mr Depp by name in the article, but Mr Depp’s lawyers said it was a clear indication of allegations Ms Heard made when she sought a restraining order against him in 2016.
Mr Depp said the allegations and the article contributed to an unfairly ruined reputation that made him a Hollywood outcast and cost him his place in the lucrative role Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise.
Ms Heard’s lawyers have argued that her opinion piece was accurate and did not defame him.
