“I’ve tried the new coffee flavored Guinness – I’m still not sure how I feel about it.”

Guinness: mirror taste the new coffee beer
Nothing beats a good pint of cold, delicious Guinness.
Well done (and as a Londoner I’m aware that’s not always the case), it’s a glass of refreshing hop heaven.
So I’ll admit when I saw that they were launching a new coffee beer I raised an eyebrow. As the saying goes, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
While the Guinness beer gods at St James’s Gate Brewery have added a few new products to their range over the years, including the 0.0% alternative and the Golden Ale, they have kept the original black goodness untouched when it comes to taste left – until now.
After proving a huge hit in the US, GUINNESS Cold Brew Coffee Beer hits UK shelves this week. It comes as coffee was revealed to be Britain’s favorite drink, overtaking tea with 95 million cups consumed daily.

People who know more about beer tasting than I do tell me Guinness has notes of coffee and chocolate anyway, so maybe I’m cynical?
To be fair, the packaging is spot on, so I imagine people will be tempted to try it when they see a can in a store fridge. It comes in a 440ml can and contains 4% ABV.
Before I took my first sip, I was told it tasted like espresso martini, which gave me some hope. Spoilers, it doesn’t.

It looks just like real Guinness and smells really really good. The coffee scent complements the smell of the stout really well.
But I admit that I wasn’t convinced at first by the taste. Perhaps a non-Guinness drinker might be more acceptable, but to me it just tasted weird having the extra flavor in it.
It definitely grew on me after a few sips and after half a glass I was a fan. I think. It retains the creamy, smooth taste of Guinness but with an added kick. It’s still weird, but in a good way. I think.
I definitely wouldn’t drink it all night and I’d probably switch back to the original after one drink – but it’s a good novelty drink.

John Burns, Head of GUINNESS GB, said: “We firmly believe that we have created a taste experience that is truly unrivaled on the market and with over 95 million cups of coffee being consumed daily in the UK alone, now is the moment has come to offer a product that plays to an excitingly large consumer space.
“There is already a natural association with coffee notes in GUINNESS signature offerings such as Draft and Extra Stout, so the creation of GUINNESS Cold Brew Coffee Beer was a perfect complement.”
GUINNESS Cold Brew Coffee Beer is available now from Tesco and will be rolling out to other supermarkets and stores over the next few weeks.
