Tony Curtis revealed in an interview with Weekly entertainment Frank Sinatra was also considered for the role of Jerry in “Some Like it Hot”:
“Billy Wilder told me he wanted to get Frank Sinatra and Mitzi Gaynor for the girl. Then, about a week later, Billy told me he wasn’t going to use Frank. He said Frank would just get in trouble. And he said he wanted to marry Marilyn instead of Mitzi, even though everyone was warning Billy that Marilyn would be in a lot of trouble too. He didn’t care.”
Wilder’s choice to pick Monroe was very risky and not without its challenges. Curtis recalls: “There was nothing pleasant or exciting about Marilyn in that movie. “She drank a lot on set.” Fortunately, Lemmon put her at ease. “He saw Marilyn for what she was like, not like personality,” his son explained to fox. The actor “easily woos people” and the trouble star is no exception.
Lemmon will also have a great friendship with Wilder and collaborate on several other films, including “The Apartment”. “We became very close friends,” Lemmon said of the director in “Portrait of 60% of the Perfect Man: Billy Wilder” (via Cinema house). “In all these years… over twenty years, I have never experienced thirty seconds of dullness [with Wilder]”, the actor stated.
Thanks to Lemmon’s likable nature and outstanding comedic talent, his artistic relationship with Wilder has spawned some of the most iconic films in cinematic history.
