Jack Nicholson always has a third Chinatown movie in mind

If “The Two Jakes” didn’t turn into a big-budget movie, it was largely sabotaged by producer Robert Evans, who deflected production in 1985 when he insisted on reviving his acting career. In his longtime role as businessman Jake Berman (ultimately portrayed by Harvey Keitel), Nicholson and Towne sat closely for several decades and returned with “Gittes vs. Gittes.”

In a 2007 interview with MTV“We’ve always planned to make three movies,” Nicholson explained. “We wanted it all to stick to the elemental stuff.” Chinatown “obviously water.” The Two Jakes “is fire and energy. And the third movie is about Gittes’ divorce and air involvement.”

The air element is fascinating, and it looks like it could be a fool if they pull it out. As Nicholson told MTV:

“[I]t is set in 1968 when a no-fault divorce took effect in California. It’s about Gittes’ divorce. The secret of Meg Tilly’s character is somehow related to the most private person in California, Howard Hughes. That is where the element of air will come into play in the picture. “
