Jacqueline Stewart leads the Museum of Cinematic Image

Film scholar Jacqueline Stewart has been appointed the next director and president of the Academy Film Museum in Los Angeles.

The foundation’s board of directors said Wednesday that Stewart, who previously served as the museum’s art and programming director, will succeed Bill Kramer to guide the museum’s vision from July 18.

“Jacqueline Stewart is the ideal choice to lead the Academy Museum in the future,” said Ted Sarandos, chairman of the Academy Museum’s board of trustees and co-CEO of Netflix.

“As a powerful and inspiring partner of Bill Kramer throughout the time leading up to our opening, she provided indispensable direction for the much-admired curatorial program. “

Last week, Kramer was named the new CEO of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the organization that gives out the Oscars.

Stewart is a Chicago native and a 2021 MacArthur Foundation Fellow known for her contributions to film studies and film conservation advocacy.

Among her many accomplishments, Stewart is the author of the book Migrating To The Movies: Cinema And Black Urban Modernity, hosts Silent Sunday Nights on Turner Classic Movies, and is the chairwoman of the National Board of Film Preservation.

In her previous role at the Academy Museum, she led the strategy and planning of its public program, education and management initiatives, from exhibitions to screenings to podcasts.

The museum opened its doors last year and will celebrate its one year anniversary in September.

“Our ambition in opening the Museum was to offer Los Angeles and the world an unprecedented institution for understanding and appreciating the history and culture of cinema, with all its artistic glory and all of it. both its power to influence and reflect on society,” Stewart said in a statement.
