Jailed Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny has claimed Russian soldiers killed a 60-year-old man because he had the same surname.

Ilya Navalny was killed in the Ukrainian city of Bucha, allegedly just because he shared Navalny’s name.

Russian forces withdrew from Bucha last month, and Ukrainian officials say they have discovered more than 400 bodies of people they believe were killed by Russian troops during their occupation of the area.

The uncorroborated claims sparked condemnation from the West and a vehement rejection from the Kremlin, which describes the allegations as “monstrous fabrication” designed to denigrate the Russian army.

Navalny shared on Twitter a picture of a passport with the name Ilya Ivanovich Navalny apparently left on purpose next to a corpse in Bucha.

“A completely innocent person was killed by Putin’s executioners (how else can I call them? definitely not ‘Russian soldiers’) because he is my namesake,” Navalny wrote.

“Apparently they were hoping he was a relative of mine.”

Navalny said he didn’t know if the man was a relative, but he was from the same village as Navalny’s father.

He renewed an appeal to the Russians to demonstrate against the war.

Millions have had to flee Ukraine since Russian troops invaded the country on February 24.

Thousands were killed or wounded and cities were leveled.

The Kremlin calls its actions a “military special operation” which it said was necessary to demilitarize and “liberate” Ukraine from nationalist extremists.

Kyiv and its western allies dismiss these arguments as an unfounded pretext for an invasion.

Navalny, 45, was jailed last year while returning to Russia after receiving medical treatment in Germany after being poisoned with a Soviet-era nerve agent.

He blamed Russian President Vladimir Putin for the attack. The Kremlin denies the accusation.

A Russian court last month found Navalny guilty of large-scale fraud and contempt of court, a move that will likely add years to his sentence.

He can post content on social media through his attorneys and supporters.
