Jake Gyllenhaal says he’s at a stage in his life where family “isn’t everything for me, but it’s pretty close.”
The Hollywood actor said there is “always something to learn” from his family, no matter how “difficult or fun” the relationship is.
He’s currently starring in Disney’s upcoming animated feature, Strange World, alongside Dennis Quaid and Jaboukie Young-White – which tells the story of a legendary family of explorers.
The film explores the relationship between three generations of men – grandfather, father and son – as well as broader themes of family and heritage.
Speaking to PA news agency about his own family at the premiere of the premiere in Los Angeles on Tuesday, Gyllenhaal said: “In my life, family has moved, divided and changed in many ways. different ways.
“You go through a phase in your life where it’s absolutely everything, it’s your means of survival.
“Then you grow up and you simply denounce it at a certain point in your life, you say ‘I don’t need any of that’.
“Then you come back and you realize how important all those people are, no matter how complicated those relationships, no matter how difficult they may be.
“And no matter how fun or full of love, there is always something to learn.
He added: “At this point in my life, family has a very different meaning than it has for me at all different stages. I think it’s the most important, the most nurturing, the most frustrating at times.
