Jake Wightman wins 1500m bronze, ending summer hat-trick

World champion Jake Wightman’s hopes of a summer hat-trick ended after he finished third in the 1500m at the Commonwealth Games.

The 28-year-old, who won the 1500m at the World Championships last month, finished three minutes and 30.53 seconds behind Australia’s Oliver Hoare and Kenya’s Timothy Cheruiyot at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham.

Scotsman Wightman had hoped to win three gold medals this summer and will now have to focus on the 800m at the European Championships later this month.
