Jameela Jamil said she couldn’t believe she’d gone “from Hollyoaks to Hollywood” as she prepared to join the Marvel Comics Universe (MCU) for the upcoming She-Hulk franchise.
The British actress, 36, who began her career on Channel 4 as part of the T4 series, said the experience on the show was “the surprise and joy of my life”.
She plays the influential supervillain Titania in the upcoming nine-part series, which also stars Tatiana Maslany, Mark Ruffalo and Benedict Wong.
Maslany plays the eponymous green hero Jennifer Walters, the cousin of Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner, who must navigate the complicated life of a single 30-year-old woman who also happens to be the 6-foot-seven super-powered Hulk.
Speaking at the series premiere in Los Angeles on Monday, Jamil also described how the series pays “homage” to Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s hit comedy series Fleabag.
“I honestly don’t know what’s going on. I can’t believe I went from saying ‘this is Hollyoaks’ to being at a Marvel premiere,” Jamil told PA news agency.
“This is absurd, it is too much to handle.
“No one was more surprised than me and I didn’t even know I was playing a superhero until I got the job and signed the contract.
“This is truly the surprise and joy of my life… Hollyoaks to Hollywood.”
When comparing the new series to Fleabag, she continued: “It’s a difficult comparison to make but I would say we pay homage to Fleabag, because She-Hulk has always broken the th wall. private.

“So we’re trying really hard to stay true to the comics and use Fleabag as an artistic and beautiful way to bring that into the cinematic universe.
She added: “It’s not as filthy as Fleabag, which is sad.”
Series writer Jessica Gao previously told PA that the writer’s room for She-Hulk is mostly women, and that Marvel boss Kevin Feige gave her “pretty much free reign” in the series .
Jamil told PA: “It feels different not to look out and see 99% of the men, it allows you to feel more authentic in your performance and be supported by the people around you.
“To know that one woman wrote this movie, two women directed this, the cast is mostly female and a lot of our department heads are women.
“We just feel very sure, very understanding, and we know from people’s reactions that we are telling the right stories authentically.”
She added: “There have been a lot of beautiful stories about women written by men but they are rarely able to grasp the experience because it is so different and think that many men just don’t know because of lack of experience. .
“We’re not trying to push people away, we’re trying to get people to see our experience and, like Hulk, hope to stand with us.”
She-Hulk: Attorney At Law airs exclusively on Disney+ from Thursday, August 18.
