James Cameron says inspiration for his biggest films came to him ‘in dreams’

James Cameron said the inspiration and “images” for some of his biggest films came to him in a dream.

The Hollywood director said people “tell stories” at night, and a screenwriter’s job is to find a way to “formalize” those stories.

It takes place before the release of Avatar: The Way Of Water, the highly anticipated sequel to Cameron’s 2009 sci-fi epic.

When asked on The One Show about finding inspiration in dreams, he said: “(yes), Terminator, dreams, Avatar… I just think dreams are his own streaming service. I run for free every night.

“I guess I did a lot of things in my dreams and I see a lot of images, sometimes they get up and sometimes write it down.

“With something for Avatar when I was in college, I jumped up and did painting… so this has been going on for a while, hasn’t it.”

The Way Of Water will see the return of characters Jake Sully and Neytiri, played by Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana respectively, as well as their new family.

Previously released trailers show underwater scenes featuring colorful jellyfish-like creatures and large horned whales.

Cameron told The One Show: “I’ve always had a dream of being in the water with amazing animals swimming around and that sort of thing, so it’s just a way of dealing with all those subconscious images.

“I think we are all scriptwriters in our heads every night. We are all telling stories to ourselves, one part of our brain performing for the other.

“I think the screenwriters just need to figure out how to legitimize that and put it in the papers.”

When asked if the wait for the third Avatar movie would extend by another 13 years, he added: “Hopefully not.”

He added that all of the film’s footage was recorded but suggested that post-production could take around two years.

It comes as Cameron and the cast of his Avatar sequel embarked on their global press tour with a brochure in central London.
