James Corden denies stealing Ricky Gervais joke on purpose

James Corden has responded to allegations that he ‘stole’ one of Ricky Gervais’ stand-up jokes.

The host of The Late Late Show made the joke in question on Monday. Viewers immediately pointed out that it was very similar to one of Gervais in a Netflix special.

Gervais himself drew attention to the similarities in a now-deleted Twitter post.

In the clip, Corden said, “When you see Elon Musk talking on Twitter, he does that thing where he goes, ‘Well, it’s the town square.’ But it’s not, because if someone puts up a poster in a town square that says “guitar lessons available,” you’re not making the people of town say, “I don’t want to play guitar!” I want to play the piano, you piece of shit!’

“It’s like, ‘This sign wasn’t for you — it was for someone else. You don’t have to fret about all this.’”

The joke was virtually identical to one Gervais made in his 2018 special Ricky Gervais: Humanity.

Before quickly deleting his post, Gervais wrote on Twitter, “The part about the town square advertising guitar lessons is brilliant.”

However, when asked if he thought Corden shamelessly stole it, the comedian replied, “I doubt he would knowingly copy such a famous stand-up routine word for word just like that.”

Corden broached the subject hours later, writing on the Late Late Show’s official Twitter page: “Accidentally told a brilliant Ricky Gervais joke on the show last night, apparently not knowing it came from him.

“It’s brilliant because it’s a Ricky Gervais joke. You can watch all of Ricky’s excellent specials on Netflix. Jx”
