James Corden has been on fire this week for accusing him of “stealing” a joke from Ricky Gervais. Now, a 2017 claim that he copied a Noel Fielding joke has surfaced.
n Monday, the host of The Late Late Show delivered the quip in his monologue about Twitter not being a town square, as the platform’s new owner Elon Musk has called it, saying, “Not, because if someone puts a posters in the town square saying, ‘There are guitar lessons available, ‘you don’t get everyone in town to join,’ I don’t want to play guitar! I want to play the piano, you son of a bitch! ‘”
The joke is almost identical to the one Gervais told in his 2018 Netflix special Mankind.
Corden later wrote on Twitter: “I accidentally told a great Ricky Gervais joke on the show last night, obviously unaware it was coming from him.”
Amid the controversy, a 2017 clip of Corden that appeared to debunk a Fielding joke at the 2010 Just for Laughs comedy festival has also resurfaced.
In his case, Fielding joked that the best way to stop someone from harassing you is to whisper, “Oi, mate,” which he suggests would prompt the attacker to drop the knife and ask, ” What is this?”
In 2017, Corden said in an interview on The Late Late Show that he found the best way to avoid being tracked was to whisper to the robber, “You’ll never believe what happened.” He said perpetrators would drop their weapons and say, “What?”
At the time, Fielding responded to a fan accusing Corden of stealing his joke, writing: “I believe this is my x-document.”
The Independent Representatives for Corden and Fielding have been contacted for comment.
Corden was also criticized last month after he was briefly banned from the Balthazar restaurant in Manhattan following allegations he was rude to waiting staff.
