Rangnick explains Ronaldo’s absence for Man Utd in derby defeat

Jamie Carragher predicted that Manchester United players can leak their criticism about Ralf Rangnick’s tactics from the dressing room after their derby loss with City of Manchester.

The Reds suffered their worst defeat under the caretaker manager after a 4-1 loss at the Etihad Stadium, with Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez each scoring a brace to make it’s goal. Jadon Sancho is just a consolation.

It left Man United fighting with a loss in the race to the finish line in Premier League top four, with Arsenal currently leading by one point and with three games in hand.

Tottenham was also beaten Everton 5-0 on Monday to close the gap on Rangnick’s side as the teams enter the final third of the campaign, in hopes of qualifying Champions League now hangs in the balance.

Several players have been heavily criticized for their poor performances at Old Trafford following Rangnick’s bold attempt to play 4-2-2-2 with Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba play central defender.

And Carragher believes the defeat will prompt some players to express their concerns about tactics, almost blaming their manager in the process.

“One thing that I think will emerge over the next few days is whether those players want to play that way and in that system,” Carragher said, speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football.

“I think when I see any team play with a 4-4-2 away from Manchester City, I always fear for them because I don’t understand how you guys are going to stop Man City from taking the players. their player in the middle of the line.

“Immediately, look at Manchester United and the way they set up, they look really tight and solid, you can see the midfield four and the back four are all in place.

“They are a tight-knit team looking to make it difficult for Manchester City.

Ralf Rangnick’s tactical gamble backfired when Man Utd lost to Man City 4-1 in the derby

“The problem you always have against this Manchester City team, is because they don’t have a centre-forward, that’s how you stop the players in the midfield.

“You look at the three players in [Kevin] De Bruyne, [Phil] Foden and [Bernardo] Silva made a mistake in the midfield. ”

“We’re talking about three of the best midfielders in world football and when you play 4-4-2, when players appear in those positions it causes confusion.”

This is not the first time a leak from the United dressing room has surfaced in the media following the crushing defeat, with reports of an altercation between Harry Maguire and Cristiano Ronaldo on the training ground only emerged in February.

And there was a story that leaked Monday morning when it emerged that Marcus Rashford was reportedly unhappy with his impactful replacement role under Rangnick.

The striker, out of contract in 2023, is now said to be weighing his options after becoming increasingly frustrated with his lack of game time, and the timing of the leak may not be a coincidence after he was brought on from the bench.

Gary Neville and Roy Keane are among a number of former club players blasting United’s squad for their poor performances, with Rashford among the players being criticized, and Carragher admitting the player. 24 years old deserves to be targeted.

“When you’re 3-1 down, you can’t be on the bench and you have to try to get the ball back and that’s when the pitch gets bigger,” said Neville. “Here’s what I said and going back to the substitution, for the whole 15 seconds of the game, Marcus Rashford didn’t move.

“Now that the others around him are running rotten, they are probably broken, two central midfielders for sure.

“But he let the ball in, and the worst thing for me is that Rashford is certainly not the tallest player in terms of press, but now in the clip he’s the deepest one there.

“I don’t want to jump into the bandwagon because he’s stuck a lot, but that’s unacceptable.”
