Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool have an opportunity to overtake Premier League leaders Manchester City by beating Pep Guardiola’s side at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday night
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has cast doubt on his former side with their crucial clash Manchester City at the horizon.
Only a point separates the two sides at the top of the First League Table as it stands, with Pep Guardiola’s team currently in the lead. But that could change on Sunday afternoon when the two sides meet.
A win for both teams would make them firm favorites to lift the trophy at the end of the season. But despite the Reds having won their last 10 league games, Carragher has concerns over their ability to face City.
Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: “I think both Alisson and Virgil Van Dijk have been fantastic in the last couple of games because of that period Liverpool just got the job done. I go back to the 6-0 win over Leeds and that was a classic Liverpool performance but it hasn’t happened in the last couple of games.”
City go into the game with a 2-0 win Burnley, but they have struggled on several occasions in their recent games. Still, Carragher said of Liverpool: “I think they need to improve their level of performance if they want to get the result they want at Manchester City.”
Sunday’s game is seen by many as a title-deciding game, although there are seven more games after the game where either side could slip. Manchester United Derby County legend and boss Wayne Rooney also agrees on the importance of the duel this weekend.
He said: “Sunday’s game could decide where the title goes because the two teams, I don’t think either of them will lose points. Both are maybe the top two teams in Europe right now and I think City’s reaction to Liverpool’s early-kick win was tremendous and that’s what champions do. If there’s a pressure game, they take that pressure off and now there’s a very challenging game ahead on Sunday.”

Of course as a former everton and Red Devils players, it’s certainly hard for Rooney to decide who he’d rather win the league. But when asked who he thinks will lift the trophy, he replied: “I don’t want any of them to be honest. I think it could go either way. I think Liverpool are in great form as well as Manchester City, but I think Liverpool can go to Manchester City and win.
Both the Reds and City have Champions League First-leg quarter-finals on Tuesday night which will surely affect both teams’ preparations for the game. Jurgen Klopp’s side travel to Portugal to take on Benfica in a game many expect to routinely beat the Primera Liga side, while City will have a more competitive game against Atletico Madrid at the Etihad Stadium before they focus on their title rivals.
