While working on her Oscar-winning biopic Judy, Renée Zellweger had an awkward mishap while filming a kissing scene.
When she and her co-star Finn Wittrock touched lips, Zellweger’s prosthetic nose ruptured and leaked glue that ran onto Wittrock’s face.
“Up until that kissing scene, I didn’t know and I look at him in horror and I’m like, ‘Am I more upset that I got that in his face — and we didn’t cut each other, so I can’t touch his face like that.’ and way of trying to take it off — or that it’s attached to my head and there’s so much more where that’s coming from?’” Zellweger said.
“The glue and thing and chemicals or something, I don’t know, and some of it just sneaks out of the crack [on the side].”
Zellweger isn’t the only one who experiences glitches with film and television equipment. Sometimes they’re hilarious — and sometimes they’re just downright embarrassing or even dangerous.
The incidents can range from falling asleep during a sex scene to knocking out a co-star.
It’s no surprise that sex scenes are a breeding ground for mishaps, such as when actors are forced to film awkward scenes while wearing a prop or sock to hide their body parts. Even at a time when intimacy coordinators are regularly present on set, things don’t always go exactly to plan.
Here are some of the biggest on-set mishaps in film and television:
Margot Robbie – The Wolf of Wall Street
The actor says that starring in The Wolf of Wall Street in the scene where she has sex with Leonardo DiCaprio on a bed of money was really painful. “Out of all that money I got a million paper cuts on my back! It’s not as glamorous as it sounds,” she said. “If anyone is planning to have sex on a pile of money, don’t do it. Or maybe real money is a little softer, but fake money is like paper, and getting off the bed I turned to get my robe and everyone gasped. I said, ‘What is this?’ And they said, ‘You look like you’ve hit a million times. Your back is covered with a thousand red scratches.”
Different Cast – Jaws 2
During filming of Steven Spielberg’s Jaws sequel, the cast were startled when real hammerhead sharks began circling them in the ocean. The problem was that her screams went unheard. The crew didn’t initially believe they were in real danger because the script said they were calling for help at that point.
Sylvester Stallone and Dolph Lundgren – Rocky IV
The fourth installment in the Rocky film series, which focuses on the boxing career of the fictional Rocky Balboa, played by Sylvester Stallone, has some compelling and authentic-looking fight scenes. So it’s no wonder that Stallone actually asked Dolph Lundgren, who plays his opponent Ivan Drago, during filming to try to really knock him out. But Lundgren hit him with such force that he was hospitalized and in intensive care for over a week.
Marlon Brando – The Godfather
Brando was notorious for his bad behavior on set. That’s one of the reasons Paramount was nervous about including him in Francis Ford Coppola’s mafia film. It didn’t start well when the actor who played the family patriarch, Vito Corleone, missed his overnight flight from LA to New York on the first day of shooting. His scene was pushed back to the next day, but it cost the producers $40,000.
Gucci Mane – Spring breakers
In his autobiography, rapper Gucci Mane said he was so tired on the set of Harmony Korine’s crime drama Spring Breakers that he fell asleep during his big sex scene. The rapper, who plays Big Arch, a drug dealer rival to James Franco’s Alien character, in the film is spotted having sex with a woman while another sucks his toes. “I couldn’t keep my eyes open. I passed out and snored. . . Harmony kept waking me up for takes.” In another interview, he explained why he was so exhausted. “I had a concert down there in St. Petersburg, Florida, on one of the days I had to shoot a scene. same night We started shooting at 10 p.m. until 1 or 2 a.m..”
Tom Cruise – Mission: Impossible – Fallout
The action star broke his ankle while performing his own stunt on the set of Mission Impossible. In the scene, Cruise is doing a quick roof jump from one building to another when his foot hits the wall. But instead of collapsing in a heap, he continues as if nothing happened until the end of the scene when he hobbles away. He said: “I knew straight away that my ankle was broken and I really didn’t want to do it again, so I just got up and got on with the recording. I said, ‘It’s broken. This is a wrap. Take me to the hospital’ and then everyone called and arranged their vacation.”
Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan – 50 Shades of Gray
Of course, this could be a lot of hype to promote the franchise’s first adult film, but there were certainly plenty of horrific sex scenes that could go wrong. Johnson, who plays Anastasia Steele, becomes romantically involved with Christian Gray (Jamie Dornan) and they pursue their BDSM desires. Johnson, who wore a modesty thong taped to her body while Dornan carried a “small bag” to protect his modesty, said, “I got whiplash once from when he threw me on the bed. So damn painful. I wish we had a gag reel from the shoot.”
Michael Imperioli is best known for his role as Tony Soprano’s protégé Christopher Moltisanti on The Sopranos. While filming his death scene in Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas, Imperioli cut his hand on a pane of glass and was taken to the hospital, where doctors rushed in to treat his fake gunshot wounds.
Bill Murray – Groundhog Day
During the filming of Groundhog Day, Murray was more irritable than usual as he got divorced and tended to walk off set. He had been asked to get an assistant to facilitate communication between himself, director Harold Raims and the studio. He was against the idea, so he hired someone who was deaf and only spoke sign language, which nobody on the set, including Murray, could understand. Ramis said, “Bill said, ‘Don’t worry, I’m going to learn sign language.’ And I think it was so uncomfortable that he gave that up in a couple of weeks. That’s anti-communication, you know? Let’s not talk.”
It was a minor mishap for Dunham as her nude spot kept falling off in scenes that required nudity. Dunham, who plays aspiring author Hannah on her comedy-drama TV series Girls, said: “I stopped wearing the nude patch after the first season of Girls. There isn’t a guy that works on this show that hasn’t seen the inside of my vagina. You stick it over your vagina. It sweats and keeps falling off. My male co-stars don’t care at the end of the day.”
Kurt Russell – The Hateful Eight
In a scene from Quentin Tarantino’s 2015 western thriller, Jennifer Jason Leigh plays the guitar as Daisy Domergue—a vintage 19th-century Martin guitar worth about $40,000 on loan from the Martin Museum in Pennsylvania. But a misunderstanding on Russell’s part led to a costly mistake. The valuable guitar was about to be exchanged for a replica prop when he snatched it from her. Russell hadn’t read the memo, however, and slammed the antique guitar into a wall while shouting “music time is over.” As a result, the Martin Museum – which described the guitar as a “priceless, irreplaceable artifact” – vowed never to lend guitars to films again.
Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal – Love and Other Drugs
Hathaway accidentally undressed too early when she thought cameras were rolling while filming Love and other Drugs. She stars alongside Jake Gyllenhaal in the erotic film based on the non-fiction book Hard Sell: The Evolution of a Viagra Salesman by Jamie Reidy. “I have to take off my trench coat and be naked underneath, and I thought we’d film,” she said. “But it turns out we were just rehearsing and I got unnecessarily naked in front of a lot of people!”
Edward James Olmos – Battlestar Galactica
In a 2007 episode of the Battlestar Galactica TV series reboot, Olmos’ character William Adama, the Commanding Officer of BS Galactica, is playing around with a model ship when he gets carried away with improvisation and smashes it to pieces. However, the model ship was museum quality and was worth about $200,000, according to Olmos, who had no idea at the time.
Christian Serratos and Michael Cudlitz – The Walking Dead
The long-running TV show The Walking Dead focuses more on blood and violence than sex. But things almost went awry during a scene between Rosita (Christian Serratos) and Abraham (Michael Cudlitz) when they had to get intimate in front of 30 crew members drinking coffee and eating ramen noodles. Cudlitz, sitting on top of Serratos, said they were almost naked but covered – but then as they “limped” the cover was knocked off leaving Serratos virtually naked. The actor said: “Then we just started laughing because it’s ridiculous. It’s two people, we hardly know each other, lying naked on top of each other.”
Mel Brooks – Flaming Saddles
During the shooting of Blazing Saddles, a man walked into a scene of the film. He wasn’t part of the crew or cast, but when director Mel Brooks let the man move on, he returned, apparently not understanding the request. Brooks then sent him a waiver to sign and left him laughing in the film. He is seen at the end of the film wearing a sweater and standing on a sidewalk watching the action as people rush out the front gates of the Warner Brothers studio.
John Malkovich – to be John Malkovich
Malkovich filmed the scene in Being John Malkovich where he storms off after discovering that Craig Schwartz (John Cusack) has rented his brain out to strangers. According to director Spike Jonze, a drunk extra threw a beer can at his head from a moving car while he yelled, “Hey Malkovich, think fast!” Jonze liked the scene so much he kept it in the film. The extra’s daily rate was increased to $700 a day because he had a speaking role.
Viggo Mortensen – The Lord of the Rings
When Aragon (Mortensen) thinks that two of the hobbits are dead in a scene in The Two Towers, he lets out a gigantic primeval scream while angrily kicking his helmet and falling to the ground. This behavior seems like an appropriate reaction to the grief his character is feeling, but in reality the actor had actually broken two toes kicking his helmet.
