Jamie Lee O’Donnell refused to answer Ryan Tubridy’s age question on the radio four years ago

Derry Girls actor Jamie Lee O’Donnell previously refused to give Ryan Tubridy her age when he asked her how old she was.

e asked the question during a radio interview back in 2018, it turns out.

A clip from The Late Late Show on Friday, in which O’Donnell once again refused to answer Tubridy’s question, caused a stir and controversy as the actor branded the question “misogynistic.”

However, it has emerged that this isn’t the first time the pair have clashed over the issue, as Ryan also asked Jamie Lee about her age during an interview on RTÉ Radio One in 2018.

Tubridy popped the question by saying, “You’re playing a 16-year-old, how old are you in real life?”.

“Not 16,” Jamie Lee replies quickly.

Then Ryan asks: “Aren’t you going to tell us your age?”.

“Well, no, because I think a big deal was made of it with Nicola [Coughlan, co-star in Derry girls] and I don’t think it was very fair.

“We get a lot of people asking our age and like nobody’s asking Dylan [Llewelyn, co-star in Derry Girls] his.

“So, it’s just a little bit unfair and it’s taken a little bit off of our performances,” said Jamie Lee.

Tubridy then told Jamie Lee, “I’m just tiptoeing away from this right now, aren’t I?” before saying, “Yeah, just a little bit.”

“I’m 47, just pretend,” O’Donnell says to end the segment before Tubridy changes the subject.

She was asked again on the latest Late Late Show.

“That might be a rude question you don’t have to answer – but may I ask how old you are?” Tubridy asked on Friday.

“I’m 117. I’m very, very wise,” O’Donnell quipped.

Tubridy then pressed Jamie Lee on the subject again and asked: “Would you consider telling me how old you are?”

O’Donnell replied: “That’s what gets on my nerves a bit, not disrespect.

“It’s always quite misogynistic, even if it’s unintentional, because men don’t get the same scrutiny in their careers.”

Ryan then insisted, “I would definitely have asked the male actor the same question,” to which O’Donnell replied, “You’re saying that now, but there’s no one here to take your word for it.”

“I said you’re great characters to play teenagers,” Ryan said.

“That’s what I was getting at — the fact that you’re a certain age, playing teenagers, and doing it so well.

“Actually, there was a compliment… please don’t take this the wrong way,” he continued.

“I’m done with that question, I’ll move on. I can read the sentiment when I see it,” Ryan finished.
