Jane Campion apologizes for ‘thoughtless’ comment about Williams sisters

Jane Campion has apologized for her “thoughtless” remarks at the Critics Choice Awards (CCA) about tennis star sisters Venus and Serena Williams.

Following backlash to her comments online, Campion said in a statement shared by US media outlets that she “absolutely celebrates” the sisters and the “great” achievement. their.

“I made a thoughtless remark by equating what I do in the world of cinema with all that Serena Williams and Venus Williams have achieved,” she said.

“I have no intention of devaluing these two legendary black women and world-class athletes.

“The reality is that the Williams sisters have actually played against men on the court (and off the field), and they have raised the bar and opened the door to what is possible for women in this world. .

“The last thing I want to do is minimize noticeable women. I love Serena and Venus.

“Their achievements are astounding and inspiring. Serena and Venus, I apologize and fully celebrate you.”
