Janice Robinson wows the judges on X Factor

Former Livin’ Joy star Janice Robinson has admitted her appearance on the X Factor in 2018 helped underline the importance of “being authentic and being myself”.

The 54-year-old singer wowed the judges with an emphatic audition for the singing competition as the large crowd was brought to their feet.

It was a performance that rolled back the years as she belted out her ’90s classic Dreamer – which she recently re-released with a brilliant new recording with DJ Lodato.

While Janice again impressed on stage and made it to the live shows, she eventually placed 14th in series 15 of the show.

And while the larger-than-life star admits she was grateful for her time on the show, she admits it set some limits for her.

She claims the show’s producers didn’t know she would still have star qualities and may have expected her to be “tragically awful” given their focus on her age and motherhood during her interview tapes.

While she admitted that there were many positive aspects to her time on the show, she openly admitted that she wasn’t handling the fact that people now thought they had constant access to her too well.

She said: “I come from a time when I was famous. You had to write a fan letter – open it in my personal time. So for me [the X Factor exposure] was an overwhelming crowd.

“And I think I had to center myself to balance the level of admiration I have out there — to have a conversation with myself.”

Janice continued, “I had to have a conversation with myself and ask myself how I want to deal with this stage of my life being in the spotlight. And I think I had decided that I would set boundaries.

“I wanted to make sure I was authentically myself in each scenario and respected the boundaries and set the narrative where I was comfortable. I didn’t want anyone to put me in an uncomfortable place. I’m a real person.”

And she admitted she’s delighted that her audition is still inspiring people around the world and showing young people that it doesn’t matter how old you are, if you are yourself, you can always succeed.

She added: “It showed young people that they don’t have to worry when they’re 25, don’t worry when they’re 30, don’t stumble when they’re 40.

“As long as you have something to offer people that makes them feel euphoric, that gives them hope, then you can keep doing that for as long as you want.

“You have to have a positive narrative and spirit to live a positive life, and I swear by that.”

Janice recently released a new version of her legendary dance anthem Dreamer alongside DJ Lodato.

The catchy tune adds an updated version of the worldwide hit and she gushes, “It’s so nice to release it for a new generation and see them connect with it. It’s for the new kids.”

She continued, “I love to see people smile. I love to see people happy when they listen to my music.”
