Nothing says western like the Pinkerton detective agency.

Jason Bateman has proven that he has a lot of leeway when choosing his roles. From Marty Byrde in The Ozark to Michael Bluth in Arrested Development, fans have gotten a good look at his acting skills. Now Bateman will dabble in the supernatural by directing the feature film The Pinkerton, which is being produced by Warner Bros. and JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot.

meeting broke the news but kept the details fairly casual, only noting that the film was “a supernatural revenge western hybrid.” Further story details and cast list likely won’t come until the film is further along in production, but there’s no word on when that might be. The Pinkerton is based on a screenplay by Daniel Casey, who also wrote F9: The Fast Saga.

History buffs might recognize the title. Pinkerton is a still active private detective agency established sometime around 1850. While not nearly as big as her, the agency has remained relevant primarily through pop culture. In an example that many readers may recognize, BioShock Infinite protagonist Booker DeWitt once worked for Pinkerton. Additionally, Pinkerton detectives also appear in Red Dead Redemption 2 to take on the Van der Lind gang.

Of course, this isn’t Jason Bateman’s first general directorial experience. He made his directorial debut with the film Bad Words, about an adult who finds a loophole that would allow him to compete on an eighth grade spelling test. He later received an Emmy for directing Ozark, in which he played that role in 9 of the show’s 44 episodes, while also co-starring as the lead.
