Jay Leno recalls how his ‘face was on fire’ in a recent garage accident

Jay Leno recalled how his “face on fire” was in a recent accident in the garage, which left him with severe burns.

The 72-year-old former host of The Tonight Show said he received “a pile of gas” while working underneath a car last month in Burbank, California.

He suffered “deep second-degree” and possibly third-degree burns in the incident but was discharged shortly before Thanksgiving.

In his first interview since the incident, he told the American news program Today that he was saved by a friend who jumped on him to put out the fire.

“It was a 1907 white steam car. The fuel line was clogged and I was underneath trying to clear (it),” he said in a short clip of the interview.

“I said ‘blow some air over the line’ and then all of a sudden, boom, I got a blast of air all over my face. Then the pilot lights went on and my face caught on fire.

“And I said to my friend ‘Dave, I’m on fire’ and… oh my God, my friend Dave pulled me out and jumped on top of me and it put out the fire.”

After being discharged from the hospital, Leno posed for a photo with some of the staff, which showed obvious burn scars on his face, neck and hands, and thanked them for the care he received. Okay.

Leno took over NBC’s Tonight when longtime host Johnny Carson retired in 1992 and returned for another stint between 2010 and 2014, before handing over to current host Jimmy Fallon.
