A jealous friend killed his love rival in cold blood with a baseball bat after texting his girlfriend “on the way baby 10 minutes,” a court heard.

Daniel Griffiths, 43, repeatedly beat Andrew Guy, 54, at his home after he sent the casual text in October last year, causing an “agonizing and slow death”.

Andrew had gone to the property near Crewe, Cheshire, to drop off some drugs around 7pm when Griffiths violently assaulted him. Police believe Griffiths mistakenly thought Andrew was interested in his partner.

Andrew’s body was discovered by his mother two days later after he complained of “10 out of 10” stomach pains.

A post-mortem later confirmed that he died of a large amount of internal bleeding caused by blunt force trauma.

After a 15-day trial at Chester Crown Court, a jury found Griffiths guilty of manslaughter. He was sentenced to eight years and six months in prison by Chester Crown Court on Wednesday May 11.

Following the verdict, Andrew’s family paid tribute to him, saying: “Andrew didn’t deserve to die the way he did and the trauma of that shaped us all.

“While it doesn’t ease the pain caused by Andrew’s senseless death, today we are grateful for the guilty verdict.”

The court heard that on October 15 Andrew, where he had been living for four months, had traveled by train from Bournemouth to his mother’s home in Cheshire.

And after one call that afternoon, he drove to the nearby towns of Market Drayton and Whitchurch to meet up with friends.

He later received a text and a call from Griffith’s partner.

But after Andrew arrived at the couple’s home around 7 p.m. to bring them drugs, a neighbor heard loud voices between Andrew and the couple.

The court heard that during the attack on the property, Griffiths dragged Andrew in and out and hit him in the stomach and leg with a baseball bat.

The beatings on his leg left dents which he covered with a T-shirt.

Andrew later drove back to Buerton, Cheshire, and changed before picking up a takeaway from Market Drayton that he had promised to take home to his mother.

And while waiting for the meal, he texted Griffiths and his partner’s phone, saying he had “10 out of 10” stomach pains and bleeding as a result of the injuries inflicted on him.

He later told his mother that Griffiths had “attacked me” with a baseball bat and confided that the pain in his stomach was getting worse.

And on Sunday, October 17, around 10:15 a.m., Andrew was found in the bathroom by his mother.

An ambulance attended the property, but despite the best efforts of paramedics and his mother, Andrew could not be resuscitated.

Detectives from Cheshire Constabulary’s major investigative team then pieced together Andrew’s movements before and after the attack, using telecom data and CCTV footage.

On October 29 last year, Griffiths was arrested at his address and subsequently charged – with the baseball bat recovered from his possession.

Senior Investigative Officer Detective Inspector Dave Hutcheon said: “Andrew died a painful and slow death from profuse internal bleeding after being struck numerous times by Griffiths, who hit him with what we believe to be a baseball bat was.

“While we may never know exactly why Andrew was attacked by Griffiths, we believe the reason was closer to home than getting drugs to the address and because he mistakenly thought Andrew was romantically interested in his girlfriend .

“It has been a difficult time for his mother, family and friends since Andrew’s death and our thoughts are with them since his passing.

“We’ve worked incredibly hard to make sure we can find his killer and give him and his family the justice they deserve.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has assisted the investigation that has brought us to where we are today, including key witnesses and members of the public who have provided information, as well as the Crown investigative team and prosecutors .”

Andrew’s family asked for privacy going forward. They said: “Andrew was a dear son, brother, uncle and father and we will miss him terribly.

“We would like to ask that we mourn in private now and that we can face our future without him.”
