Jeremy Clarkson admits columnist Meghan Markle is ‘disgraceful’ in lengthy apology

Jeremy Clarkson has admitted his column in The Sun in which he said he “hate” Meghan Markle was “disgraceful” and said he was “deeply sorry”.

In a lengthy statement posted online on Monday, TV presenter Clarkson said he emailed the couple on Christmas Day to apologise.

“One of the weird things I’ve noticed lately is that whenever an MP or a celebrity is asked to apologize for something, whether the apology is sincere or deep, No matter how sharp, it is never enough for those who have called. for it in the first place.

“So I’ll try to catch up with the trend this morning with an apology for something I said in a recent Sun column about Meghan Markle. I am really sorry. All the way from the balls of my feet to the cysts on my head. This is me raising my hand. It’s a mea culpa with bells on.

“Usually, I read what I write to other people before I apply, but I was home alone on that fateful day and was in a hurry. So when I’m done, I just hit submit. And then, when the pole showed up the next day, the mine went off,” Clarkson said.

He said he ignored the “slow rumble” of an argument at the start but then “the rumbling grew louder” so he reread the passage to see “all the What’s that fuss about?”

“We’ve all been there, I guess. In that exact moment when we suddenly realize we are completely messed up. You sweat and get cold at the same time. And your head weight. And you feel sick. I can’t believe what I’m reading. Did I really say that? Awful.

“I knew what happened immediately. I thought of a scene from Games Of Thrones, but I forgot to mention this. So it looks like I’m really calling for the violence of the uprising to rain down on Meghan. I’m so mad at myself because in all these controversial Top Gear days, when I’ve been accused of all sorts of things, it’s very rarely sexist.

“For example, we never did the ‘women can’t park’ joke. Or assume that powerful cars are only for men. And I was thrilled when Jodie Kidd and Ellen MacArthur made the fastest lap ever in our reasonably priced car. I’m just not sexist and I abhor violence against women. And I only seem to be in favor of that.

“I was tortured and so did everyone else. My phone went crazy. Very close friends were very angry. Even my daughter took to Instagram to denounce me,” Clarkson continued.

Clarkson’s statement went on to say that ITV and Amazon, which airs Who Wants to be a Millionaire and The Grand Tour respectively, are “bright”.

Video of the day

He said: “The Sun was quick to apologize and I tried to explain myself. Still, there were calls for me to be fired and charged with hate.

“Over 60 MPs demanded action. ITV, the producer of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, and Amazon, the producer of the Farm Show and Grand Tour, are both thriving.

“So I wrote to everyone who worked with me saying I was sorry and then on Christmas morning I emailed Harry and Meghan in California apologizing to them.

“I said I was confused by what they said on TV, but the language I used in my column was disgraceful and I am deeply sorry.”

Clarkson, who referred to England captain Harry Kane’s World Cup penalty miss, said he would “try” to be “interesting and cautious” at the same time in columns. Future.

His statement concluded: “Over the past thirty years, I have written nearly five thousand newspaper and magazine entries, so it is inevitable that one day I will make a Harry Kane and the sky one of damn things. That’s what happened with the work about Meghan.

“So can I continue now? Not sure. It’s hard to be interesting and cautious at the same time. You never hear laughter from a health and safety conference. But I promise you this, I will try.

“Who knows? Soon I’ll be a grandfather, so in the future, I’ll probably just write about that.”
