Channel 5 star Jeremy Vine has sparked fury after apparently claiming that young Russian soldiers fighting for Putin “probably deserve death”.
The 56-year-old broadcaster left viewers stunned when he made the controversial comment on the magazine show.
Jeremy made the remark during a heated phone call with a viewer who appeared on the show to discuss Russia’s recent invasion of Ukraine.
After the caller named Bill implied that the young Russian soldiers fighting for Putin didn’t want to keep fighting the Ukrainians, host Jeremy suggested that the soldiers “deserve to die.”
“A whole bunch of those Russians you’re likely to find will cross over. They put their hands up this morning because they didn’t want to fight Ukrainians. Putin told them lies, surprise, surprise,” caller Bill said during the show.
To which Jeremy replied, “Right. But the brutal reality is if you put on a uniform for Putin and go and fight his war, you probably deserve to die, right?”
The veteran broadcaster’s comment divided viewers as the majority seemed appalled by his “brutal” reaction.
One angry Twitter user wrote: “I can’t believe Jeremy Vine just said that. Completely shocked at his lack of compassion.”
“Ranchy and obnoxious comments from Vine aimed at drawing viewers in and eliciting a reaction,” echoed another.
“Wow… we really left and lost all compassion for the people. Disgusting,” tweeted someone else.
After the backlash, Jeremy made an attempt to defend himself, insisting he was merely offering the caller a reciprocal view.
“I answer a caller with the counterpoint to their view of what I do day in day out and what my job is,” Jeremy defended.
“My views are neither here nor there.”
Jeremy’s comment comes after heartbreaking video of a Russian soldier bursting into tears while on the phone with his mother after surrendering to Ukrainians went viral.
The difficult-to-watch footage shows a young soldier being comforted by a group of women after tearfully throwing down his gun.
After borrowing one of the friendly women’s phones to call his mother and let her know he’s still alive, the young soldier falls to the ground in shock.
He blows him kisses when his mother replies and bursts into sobs as soon as he sees her.
