Jessie Buckley was named winner of Best Actress at the 31st Annual Critics’ Circle Theater Awards for her role in Cabaret.
The musical revival, directed by Rebecca Frecknall and billed as a cabaret at the Kit Kat Club, emerged as the front-runner at the ceremony, which took place at London’s Ham Yard Hotel on April 3rd.
The West End show, which has been running at London’s Playhouse Theater since December 2021, won a total of three awards, the highest tally of the night, and also received the gong for Best Director for Freckle and the Best Designer award for Tom Scutt.
Oscar-nominated Buckley played Sally Bowles in the production opposite Eddie Redmayne as The Emcee, with their roles now being filled by Amy Lennox and Hawkeye star Fra Fee.
Rupert Goold’s Spring Awakening won Best Musical, and actor Stuart Thompson was co-winner for Most Promising Newcomer for his role as Moritz.
He shared the award with Samuel Creasey, who played Malcolm Polstead in the theatrical adaptation of Sir Philip Pullman’s novel La Belle Sauvage.
The Best Actor award went to The Crown star Ben Daniels for his role as author and activist Ned Weeks in Dominic Cooke’s new production of Larry Kramer’s The Normal Heart.
Kramer’s largely autobiographical play is set during the 1980s AIDS crisis, and the UK cast for the production also included Silent Witness star Liz Carr and Poldark’s Luke Norris.
Bestselling author Zadie Smith was named winner of the Most Promising Playwright award along with Igor Memic.
Smith was honored for her debut play, The Wife Of Willesden, adapted from Chaucer’s The Wife Of Bath’s Tale, while Memic was honored for her debut drama, Old Bridge, which focuses on “personal history in its depiction of the war.” Torn Bosnia”.

The Good Wife star Cush Jumbo won Best Shakespeare Performance for Hamlet.
The ceremony comes ahead of the 2022 Olivier Theater Awards, taking place at the Royal Albert Hall on April 10, where stars including Jumbo, Buckley and Daniels will also be nominated.
The Critics’ Circle Theater Awards were established in 1989 and are presented by the Theater Department of the Critics’ Circle.
