Jimmy Carr: Protesters gather outside Corn Exchange

Jimmy Carri The audience’s latest performance in Cambridge was surrounded by protesters after he made a derogatory joke about the Holocaust.

The comedian was faced with a backlash following his comments about the Gypsy, Roma and tourist communities in Netflix The comedy special, His Dark Material, went viral.

In the clip, Jimmy tries to make a bleak joke about the Holocaust – in which six million Jews were systematically murdered by the Nazis under Adolf Hitler’s supervision – as he targets thousands Gypsies were also killed by the regime.

“When people talk about the Holocaust, they talk about the tragedy and horror of the six million Jewish lives lost to the Nazi war machine. But they never mentioned the thousands of gangsters that were killed by the Nazis,” he told the audience.

“Nobody wants to talk about it, because nobody wants to talk about the positives.”

His comments sparked anger, and his performance at the Corn Exchange in Cambridge on Wednesday was met with more than 100 protesters outside the venue.

Cambridge Stand Up Against Racism organized the protest, and people gathered holding placards and loud speakers, chanting: “Out, Carr, out!”

“We need to inform him that his vile racist jokes are not welcome in Cambridge. Our GRT communities are being battered by our government and we cannot allow this outrage to continue by going unmarked,” a post was shared on the group. Facebook page read.

Protesters blocked fire exit and drum beat, follow CambridgeshireLive .

The site, located on Wheeler Street, was lit in the colors of the Romanian flag, and the city council confirmed the Corn Exchange would be lit as a sign of solidarity.

Leaflets detailing abuse and racism against the Gypsy, Roma and Tourist communities were also distributed.

Protester Martin Ward said: “I am absolutely disgusted and angry at Jimmy Carr’s comments about Jews, travelers, gypsies, gays and disabled people.

“We are still waiting for an apology from you,” he smoked.

Jimmy’s comments were condemned by the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, Auschwitz Memorial and Hope Not Hate, and Downing Street even reversed course, calling the comedian’s comments “deeply disturbing”.
