Jo Charrington appointed Co-Chair of EMI Records, partnering with Rebecca Allen to run UK’s largest studio Universal

Universal Music UK today (March 17) confirmed that its EMI and Capitol firms are consolidating under the joint leadership of Rebecca Allen and Jo Charringtoneffective immediately.

Charrington was previously the President of Capitol Records UK. Her former co-chairman at that label, Nick Raphael, left Universal Music UK in January.

Charrington and Raphael have signed, developed and broken names like Sam Smith and 5 Seconds Of Summer over the past decade.

During his nine years at the Capitol, Charrington – who became sole President of that label earlier this year – has also worked with talent including Aitch, Mae Muller and Zoe Wees, all of new music jobs for 2022.

EMI Records is Universal Music UK’s largest record label by market share, both in terms of album sales and streaming equivalents.

Capitol Records UK has now become part of a broader EMI operation; Capitol Records UK will continue to be a division of the EMI label group, along with Motown UK.

This week’s move joins Charrington with Rebecca Allen as Co-President of EMI Records.

Over the past 12 months, with Allen as Chairman, EMI has released No.1 albums by Bastille, Elton John, Kanye West, Taylor Swift and The Killers in the UK.

After starting her career at London Records, Charrington spent five years managing artists before moving to A&R, a change that led her to Popular music in 2011 as vice president of A&R, first London Records then Capitol Records when it was launched as a UK label in 2013.

Throughout her career, she has had numerous successes with artists including 5SOS, Paloma Faith, Scouting For Girls, JLS, Liam Payne, Imogen Heap, Lemar, Aloe Blacc and Olly Murs as well as Sam Smith.
