Joe Biden and Liz Truss pledge to protect Good Friday Agreement at meeting in New York

US President Joe Biden and British Prime Minister Liz Truss met in person for the first time on Wednesday and said they wanted to ensure the 1998 Good Friday Agreement that brought peace to Northern Ireland is protected.

iden and Truss, who met just days after Queen Elizabeth’s funeral, sat down on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York for discussions that included Ukraine.

“We are both committed to protecting the Good Friday Agreement in Northern Ireland. I look forward to hearing what’s on your mind and how we can continue to work together,” Biden told Truss ahead of their talks.

Truss told him: “And of course I look forward to speaking about the Belfast Good Friday Agreement and how we will ensure it is kept in the future.”

Biden has insisted Britain does nothing that could jeopardize a quarter-century of peace in Northern Ireland.

Meanwhile, on Ukraine, both Truss and Biden agreed that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s actions underscore the need for allies to continue their economic and military support to Ukraine, Truss’s office said.

Putin ordered Russia’s first war mobilization since World War II during a televised address on Wednesday, in which he also announced moves to annex parts of Ukrainian territory and threatened to defend Russia with nuclear weapons.

“Leaders have condemned Putin’s recent belligerent statements on Ukraine,” said a spokesman for Truss, who took office just over two weeks ago.

“They agreed that his actions underscore the need for allies to continue their economic and military support to Ukraine.”

They also agreed to step up efforts to reduce energy dependency on Russia, the official said.

A White House statement said the two leaders pledged to continue close coordination on global challenges, “including helping Ukraine defend against Russian aggression, address challenges posed by China and secure a… sustainable and affordable energy supply”.
