Midfielder Joey Beauchamp has made more than 350 appearances for Oxford United in two caps for the club but has also represented West Ham, Swansea, Swindon and Abingdon Town.
Legendary Oxford United Winger Joey Beauchamp has died aged 50.
Oxford wrote in a statement: “The thoughts of everyone at Oxford United are with the family and friends of Joey Beauchamp, who has passed away aged 50.
“Oxford-born Joey signed on as a YTS intern in 1987 after playing ball at the 1986 Milk Cup Final as part of the Summertown Stars.
“He’s currently 10th in the Oxford all-time scoring list with 428 games, and fifth in the Oxford all-time scoring chart with 80.
“As a young player and attracting the interest of many top clubs, Joey was bought by West Ham United for £1,000,000 in 1994 before playing at Swindon Town. Thereafter, he returned to Manor to help the home team win promotion in 1996.
“A toe injury ended his career following his last goal for the club at Kassam Stadium against Exeter City.
“The club will pay a fitting tribute to one of their greatest ever players in the near term but for now, we ask fans to allow Joey’s family a little privacy at this extremely sad time.”
Oxford fans paid tribute to Beauchamp on social media on Saturday night.
One supporter tweeted: “This totally blew me away this evening.” “Remember him because he was a sensational player and think about his family. RIP Joey.”
Another fan wrote: “RIP Joey. Such a yellow-loving talent. Joey may be gone but will never forget, such memories he has left us.
“Thinking is with his family and friends.”
And one supporter tweeted: “It’s hard to explain to non-football enthusiasts what the essence and soul of a football club is, and how one can define and represent for a lot what a club means to the fans.
“Joey Beauchamp was, and always will be, for Oxford United. Gutted.”
Former defender Ross Weatherstone – who played with Beauchamp at Oxford – wrote: “It is an honor to call you a friend and a great honor to experience the same football field as you.
“My thoughts are with all of your family and especially your daughters. Every great player wears the yellow jersey of Oxford United.
“Sleep well buddy, god got the best left leg I’ve ever played in.”
West Ham and Swindon also offered their condolences to Beauchamp’s loved ones.
“The thoughts of everyone at West Ham United are with Joey Beauchamp’s family and friends,” West Ham’s official account tweeted. “Rest in peace, Joey.”
Swindon added: “We are heartbroken to learn of the death of former Town player Joey Beauchamp.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Joey’s family and friends at this incredibly sad time.”
