John Aldridge: Villarreal have to get away tonight – and that will play into Liverpool’s hands

LIVERPOOL should make it into another Champions League final – because this time Villarreal need to get out of their shell.

Urgen Klopp’s side did well as they secured a 2-0 lead over their Spanish opponents in the first leg at Anfield as they faced a side that were determined to defend at all costs.

I can understand why Unai Emery took this approach knowing his Villarreal side couldn’t match Liverpool in front of a passionate Anfield crowd.

However, they won’t be able to play like that in the second leg and that will play into Liverpool’s hands.

Villarreal are a good club, they are run by a coach who has a great record in European competitions and they deserve so much credit for getting this far in the Champions League.

But they’re dealing with a great Liverpool side and can’t match them unless something remarkable happens.

That could be an early red card for a Liverpool player, an opening goal for Villarreal or a huge mistake giving them a way back into the game.

The more likely scenario has to be that Emery will be forced to use more ambitious tactics as he tries to close the two-goal deficit and that’s where Liverpool will pick them up.

Klopp has rested some of his big names at Newcastle and still got the victory that keeps the Premier League title boost on course.

Now he can bring back Trent Alexander-Arnold, Fabinho and Mo Salah for the Villarreal game and I’m fully confident Liverpool will book his place in a third cup final this season. John Aldridge: Villarreal have to get away tonight – and that will play into Liverpool’s hands
