John Cusack wanted his Con Air character to stand out from other action heroes in a major way

It’s not uncommon for actors to make special requests for their characters. Even Cage wanted a real bat on the set of “The Vampire’s Kiss”, but decided to eat it. real cockroaches when they can’t make it happen. As it turned out, however, Cusack had a possible, but odd, investigation in mind.

In Empire’s reminisce memories for “Con Air,” screenwriter Scott Rosenberg talks about how Cusack jumped on board not because of the script itself, but because of what starring in a bombastic summer blockbuster could do for his career. . He has a single request in mind, regarding his footwear:

“He said, ‘I want to make the first action hero wearing Birkenstocks. Charlton Heston wears sandals and he kicks his ass. I want to do the same.’ So Larkin wears sandals.”

There’s so much turmoil going on in “Con Air” that I seem to have missed that little detail. I’ll give it to Cusack. I can’t really recall the last action star whose top shoes were Birkenstocks, let alone wearing crew socks. Of course, you have exceptions like Bruce Willis without shoes in “Die Hard” and Bryce Dallas Howard wearing heels in “Jurassic World”.

“Con Air” is now available to rent and buy on multiple VOD streaming platforms.
