John Huston has unraveled a true mystery about the treasure trove of the Sierra Madre

When Huston was working on his long-running adaptation of “Treasures of the Sierra Madre”, he wrote to the author of the original novel to let him know about the upcoming film, and that a good part of the film would be released. filmed in his adopted hometown. Little is known about Traven, other than that he wrote his novels in German and that he lived for many years in Mexico, which provides the setting for most of his novels.

After spending some time in New York directing a play, Huston returned to Hollywood to find a letter from Traven waiting for him. Over several pages, the writer offered suggestions on how Huston might have shot the film, including lighting, location, and setting. With filming started in early 1947, Huston wrote to request an interview. He received an elusive answer (via John Huston: A biography):

“I can’t guarantee anything, but if you go to the Reforma hotel, in Mexico City, in early January, I’ll try to meet you there. I don’t promise.”

Huston decided to test fire and flew down to the Mexican capital. He waited at the hotel, but there was no sign of Traven. Just as he was about to fly back, he was approached by a skinny man who claimed to be Hal Croves, an interpreter from Acapulco. Traven couldn’t do it, but a written note said Croves was allowed to discuss his novels in detail.

Hughes signed him up as a technical consultant, and when he returned with the cast and crew, Croves went out of his way to assist with translation and advise on gold panning techniques. Despite his enthusiasm, Croves is very wary of the camera, leading Huston to suspect that he himself is actually the author of the mystery.
