John Leguizamo has reported “F’d up” that James Franco has been cast as Fidel Castro in an upcoming biopic.

arlier this week, Limit line reported that Franco will play the Cuban leader in Miguel Bardem’s independent film Cuba’s Alina.

The film is based on the true life of Alina Fernandez (Ana Villafañe), a Cuban exile at the age of 10 who learned that she was Castro’s daughter. Mía Maestro has been cast as Natalia “Naty” Revuelta, a social character with whom he has a romantic relationship.

News of Franco’s casting was met with outrage, with many criticizing the casting of a white actor to play the Cuban.

On Friday, Leguizamo shared his own frustrations on Instagram. “How is this still happening?” the Romeo + Juliet star wrote. “How does Hollywood exclude us but also steal our stories? No more appropriating Hollywood and streamers! Boycott! F’d up this!

“Plus a serious story that’s hard to tell without aggravation would be wrong!”

Leguizamo added: “I don’t have a penalty with Franco but he’s not Latino!”

On Twitter, many social media users shared their frustration at the limited roles available to Latinx performers.

However, Cuba’s AlinaProducer John Martinez O’Felan countered Leguizamo’s claims, calling them a “blind attack”.

“A guy like John Leguizamo has historically been considered by the Spaniards as one of America’s earliest Latino actors since the 90s and I’ve always admired him as an underdog. But his comments are culturally uneducated and a blind attack with no content related to this project,” he said. The Hollywood Reporter.

“The fact of the ignorant part that lies in his statement reveals his personal view of being ‘Latin’, because a land or inhabited area does not define blood history or a person’s genetics.”

The film will mark one of Franco’s first major projects since he was accused of sexual misconduct by multiple women in 2018.

Five women, including four of his former students, were arrested in January 2018 on charges of inappropriate sexual behavior by the 43-year-old man. At the time, Franco said the allegations were “inaccurate” but he didn’t want to “shut down” those who had “no voice”.

Last year, he settled a lawsuit by two of his former students. In an interview, he described as “completely blind to power dynamics” while admitting to having sex with his acting students.
