John Stones will miss England’s friendly against Ivory Coast as he left camp as a precaution.
The 27-year-old was due to start in Saturday’s 2-1 friendly win against Switzerland but was replaced by Ben White after a warm-up session.
Boss Gareth Southgate said Stones was “feeling a bit tense” ahead of this game and the Football Association have confirmed he will not feature against the Ivorians on Tuesday.
A statement said: “John Stones has left camp in England and returned to Manchester City.
“After being withdrawn from the starting XI ahead of Saturday’s 2-1 win against Switzerland at Wembley, the defender came under further scrutiny.
“Following today’s session at Tottenham Hotspur’s training ground, it was decided that Stones would not play a role against Ivory Coast on Tuesday and has returned to his club as a precaution.”
Stones is the seventh player to withdraw from this month’s meeting.
Trent Alexander-Arnold, Reece James, Tammy Abraham and Aaron Ramsdale all retired through injury before Ramsdale’s replacement Sam Johnstone resigned and Bukayo Saka tested positive for Covid-19.
