Johnny Depp and Amber Heard were involved in ‘mutual abuse’, therapist says in court

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard have been involved in “mutual abuse” throughout their relationship, a therapist for the couple has said.

Aurel Anderson, a clinical psychotherapist who has seen the couple on several occasions, said Mr Depp told her his former wife “gave as best she could” during their struggles.

The actor is suing Ms Heard for defamation over a 2018 comment written in The Washington Post which his attorneys say contained false allegations that he physically and sexually assaulted her during their marriage.

Testifying at the US trial on Thursday, Ms Anderson said Mr Depp struggled to keep up with Ms Heard’s “jackhammer-style speaking” during her sessions.

“She was very excited,” she told jurors at the Fairfax County Courthouse.

“So (Mr. Depp) had no voice, he couldn’t keep up with her rapid-fire conversational style.

“He had been well controlled for decades, with Ms Heard he was triggered and they were involved in what I saw as mutual abuse.”

Ms Anderson said Ms Heard had reported being violent towards her former partner and said it was a “point of pride” to start a fight when she felt “disrespected”.

“She felt like if he hit her, she had to hit him back, so she always did,” she said.

“She loved him, he loved her … she wasn’t stupid, she knew what they were doing wasn’t healthy, so she wanted to divorce him, but she didn’t.”

The court previously heard video testimony from Ms Heard’s former personal assistant, Kate James, who said the actress sent her a “barrage” of abusive text messages.

Ms James, who worked for the actress from 2012 to 2015, said the verbal attacks often “made no sense” and that Ms Heard needed “someone to hit out at”.

She was previously ordered to testify at Mr Depp’s 2020 trial in London, where he sued the editor of The Sun newspaper over an article that called him a “woman-beater”.

The actor was denied permission to appeal the case to the Court of Appeal after a judge found the allegations in the article proved to be “essentially true.”

Ms. Heard’s article in The Washington Post was titled “I Speak Out Against Sexual Violence — and Faced the Wrath of Our Culture.”
