Johnny Depp came as close to collapsing as ever after severing a finger

Johnny Depp says he was ‘probably as close as I’ve ever been’ to having a nervous breakdown after his fingers were severed from a vodka bottle during an argument with his former wife Amber Heard.

The actor detailed an alleged incident that took place in Australia in March 2015, in which his finger looked “like Mount Vesuvius” as he testified before the US defamation trial on Wednesday.

He said that in his state of shock he wrote “little reminders” of Ms Heard’s “lies” in blood on the walls of the property where they were staying.

Mr Depp is suing Ms Heard for defamation over a 2018 article she wrote in the Washington Post, which his lawyers wrongly imply he physically and sexually abused her.

The actor has testified that Ms Heard had a “need for conflict” during their relationship and often treated him abusively and violently.

Testifying on Wednesday, Mr Depp was questioned about the incident in Australia, in which he claimed his former partner threw two bottles of vodka at him

“She threw the big bottle and it touched and broke everywhere,” he told the court.

“Honestly, at first I didn’t feel the pain at all, I didn’t feel any pain at all. What I felt was heat and I felt like something was dripping down my hand.

“I looked down and found that the tip of my finger had been severed and I was looking straight at my protruding bone and the fleshy part of the inside of your finger.

“Blood just gushed out and… I don’t know what a nervous breakdown feels like, but I’d probably never been that close. Nothing made sense.

“I knew in my head and in my heart this is not life. Nobody should have to go through this.

He continued, “I started writing little reminders of our past on the walls in my own blood, which basically represented lies that she had told me, lies that I had caught her telling.”

Mr Depp said he took refuge in the bathroom “under the madness” and called his doctor and asked him to come straight away.

He added that he later lied about the cause of the injury, telling hospital staff he “banged her in those big accordion doors.”

“I lied because I didn’t want to disclose … that it was Ms. Heard who threw a vodka bottle at me and then took my finger,” he said.

“I didn’t want to get her in trouble.

“I’ve tried to keep things as simple as possible for everyone, I didn’t want to bring her name into play.”

Ms Heard has previously claimed she was a victim of abuse during the Australian trip, describing the incident as a “three day hostage situation”.

Mr Depp said that over time his marriage to Ms Heard has felt like he was “in a relationship” with his mother (Evelyn Hockstein/AP).

Much of the evidence heard so far in the Virginia trial relates to Mr Depp’s use of substances while the two were together, which Ms Heard’s attorneys say has sparked violent episodes.

The actor said he was “more inspired” to turn to drugs and alcohol because of the “constant clashes” between him and Ms Heard.

“There wasn’t a day where she woke up expecting something to hit the fan, and it did pretty much like clockwork,” he said.

“I had to have something to distance myself and to distance my heart from these verbal attacks, I had to have something to sustain myself.”

Mr Depp said that over time his marriage to Ms Heard had felt like he was “in a relationship” with his mother.

“Things came up and I was suddenly wrong about everything,” he said.

“If you tried to explain yourself and correct the problem, the misunderstanding, it would exacerbate as Ms Heard could not be wrong.

“It just didn’t happen, she can’t be wrong.”

Mr Depp wore a gray suit and light paisley tie and had his long hair tied back, and Ms Heard wore a pale yellow blazer with her hair loose.

The actress is also scheduled to testify during the trial in Fairfax County District Court, which is expected to last a total of seven weeks.
