Johnny Depp is making his first feature film in 25 years

Johnny Depp is making his first feature film in 25 years with Modi, about Italian painter and sculptor Amedeo Modigliani.

The 59-year-old, who recently closed his multi-million dollar defamation case against his former partner Amber Heard, will co-produce with Hollywood greats Al Pacino and Barry Navidi.

Based on the play Modigliani by Dennis McIntyre and filmed by Jerzy and Mary Kromolowski, Modi tells the story of the artist’s time in Paris in 1916.

It will offer a snapshot of a “tumultuous and eventful” 48 hours in which, after long considering himself a critical and commercial failure, he has solidified himself as a creative force.

The project aims to start production in spring 2023 in Europe.

Depp said: “The saga of Mr Modigliani’s life is one that I am incredibly honored and truly humbled to bring to screen.

“It was a life of hardship, but triumphs in the end – a universally human story that all viewers can relate to.”

Modi will be his second feature film as a director, following 1997’s The Brave, in which he starred opposite Marlon Brando.

It comes a week after Depp confirmed his first starring role since winning his now-infamous legal battle with Heard in Fairfax County, Virginia earlier this year.

He will appear in the film Jeanne Du Barry, which is being produced by French company Why Not Productions.

Mr Depp is suing his former partner over a 2018 article she wrote for the Washington Post about her experiences as a domestic violence survivor, which his lawyers said they falsely accused him of being an abuser.

Pacino, whose numerous credits include The Godfather, Scarface and Donnie Brasco, has previously worked with veteran producer Navidi on various projects including The Merchant Of Venice (2004), Wilde Salome (2011 ) and Salome (2013).

Working mainly in France, Modigliani is known for his portraits and nudes with elongated faces and bodies.

Although his works were not well received during his lifetime, they have been in high demand ever since.

He died in Paris in 1920 at the age of 35 from tuberculous meningitis.
