Johnny Depp Libel Case: Amber Heard Burning & Drowning Lyrics “Were a Joke,” Actor Testifies

Johnny Depp says texts he sent to actor Paul Bettany about the burning and drowning of his former partner Amber Heard were a joke based on a Monty Python sketch.

The actor told a US court yesterday he was ashamed of the messages but said they were an attempt at “irreverent and abstract humor”.

It comes as Mr Depp continues to testify in the defamation trial, which is taking place in Fairfax County, Virginia and is now in its third week.

The actor is suing Ms Heard for defamation over a 2018 article she wrote in The Washington Postwhich his attorneys wrongly imply that he physically and sexually abused her.

The court previously heard that Mr Depp had written during a text exchange with Mr Bettany in 2013: “Let’s burn amber. Let’s drown them before we burn them. I’ll fuck her burned corpse afterwards to make sure she’s dead.”

But Mr Depp said he and Mr Bettany bonded over their “abstract sense of humour” for dealing with sticky situations and the comments were never “intended to be real”.

“Because these are private texts, there was a lot … in context,” he said. “It’s important to realize that none of this was ever meant to be real and the language used that… yes, I’m ashamed (of) how peanut butter needs to be spread around the world.

“For example, the text about the burning of Mrs. Heard is straight from Monty Python and the sketch about the burning of witches and the subsequent drowning of the witches. It’s a movie we’d all see when we were 10 – it’s just irreverent and abstract humor.”

Mr Depp added that Mr Bettany and Ms Heard’s relationship was “abhorrent” as she sees him as a “menace”. “Ms Heard despised Mr Bettany mainly because we had become such close friends and he was a threat to her and would take me away from her.”

Mr Depp has denied all allegations that he ever assaulted Ms Heard. He told the court after reading it The Washington Post article, he felt like he had been “hit in the head with a two-by-four (piece of wood)”.

Meanwhile, jurors yesterday listened to audio in which he pointed out the violence that could ensue if their arguments escalated. “The next step, if I don’t go away… will be a bloodbath, like on the island,” Mr Depp says on the recording. In other audio clips, he loudly yells vulgarities at his wife, calls her a demeaning name and yells at her, “You stupid F…”.

Mr Depp winced on the stand as the clips played, while Ms Heard appeared to be fighting back tears. During testimony yesterday, Mr Depp said very little, although when relayed he tried to explain some of his crude language and again denied cutting off his finger during a fight with Ms Heard, despite telling so much to people at the time . He now says the finger was severed when Ms Heard threw a vodka bottle at him.

“Why would I start cutting off digits in my 50s?” he said, showing the jury his right hand. “I cannot take responsibility for what I now call Little Richard, my severed finger.”

Most of the interrogations consisted of Ms Heard’s attorney, Ben Rottenborn, playing audio clips or reading vulgar text messages from Mr Depp and asking him if he had read them correctly. Throughout cross-examination, Mr. Depp showed his displeasure with Mr. Rottenborn’s questions. When Mr Rottenborn interrupted a reply, Mr Depp said: “I have spoken.” When Mr Rottenborn said he considered the question answered, Mr Depp replied: “As long as you are satisfied.”

Mr Depp also expressed his disapproval when Mr Rottenborn read headlines from a series of negative articles about the actor, some dating back to 2014.

“These are all hit tracks. That’s dirt,” Mr Depp said.

Mr. Rottenborn introduced the articles to show that the 2018 post Office At the heart of the case is not the article that tarnished his reputation, but a long history of wrongdoing. While the defamation lawsuit is said to focus on whether Mr Depp was defamed in the article, most of the trial has focused on ugly details of the couple’s brief marriage.

Mr Depp denies ever hitting Ms Heard, while Ms Heard’s lawyers argue that Mr Depp physically and sexually abused her and that his denials have no merit because he was often drunk and high to the point of passing out.

Ms Heard’s lawyers cited his history of vandalizing hotel rooms. Mr Depp is also facing a lawsuit filed by a member of a film crew alleging the actor assaulted her in 2018. The jury saw dozens of Mr Depp’s texts to friends about his drinking, drug use and interactions with his then-wife, as well as his remorseful notes towards Ms Heard and her father.

Mr Depp said the allegations and the article contributed to an unjustly ruined reputation that cost him his role in the Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise. Ms Heard’s lawyers say Mr Depp’s damaged reputation is the result of his own conduct.
