Johnny Depp says he was a victim of domestic violence as he closes evidence

Johnny Depp concluded his testimony during the US defamation lawsuit against Amber Heard by saying he was a victim of domestic violence.

The actor testified personally at the trial in Fairfax County, Virginia, where he was questioned about his own violent episodes and allegations that he physically assaulted his former partner.

He is suing Ms Heard for defamation over a 2018 article she wrote in The Washington Post, which his lawyers falsely imply he physically and sexually abused her.

Mr Depp has denied all allegations and says he is ashamed of the evidence presented to the court, including video of him smashing objects in a kitchen and abusive text messages he shared with his friend, actor Paul Bettany , shared.

Incidents, including a trip to Australia in March 2015 where Mr Depp severed the tip of his finger and another time he alleges that Ms Heard threw a can of spirits at his head, have also been investigated.

In other audio clips, Mr Depp can be heard telling the actress to shut up, fatso.

In her final question to Mr Depp on Monday, his lawyer Camille Vasquez asked: “What did you answer when Ms Heard said, ‘Tell the world Johnny, tell them that Johnny Depp, a man, is also a victim of domestic violence is? ‘”

“I said yes, I am,” Mr Depp replied.

The actor previously said texts he sent to Mr Bettany about the Aquaman star’s burning and drowning were a joke based on a Monty Python sketch.

The court previously heard that Mr Depp had written during a text exchange with Mr Bettany in 2013: “Let’s burn amber.

“Let’s drown them before we burn them. I’ll fuck her burned corpse afterwards to make sure she’s dead.”

But Mr Depp said he and Mr Bettany bonded over their “abstract sense of humour” for dealing with sticky situations and the comments were never “intended to be real”.

“Because these are private texts, there was a lot … in context,” he said.

“It’s important to realize that none of this was ever meant to be real and the language used that… yes, I’m ashamed (of) how peanut butter needs to be spread around the world.

“For example, the text about the burning of Mrs. Heard is straight from Monty Python and the sketch about the burning of witches and the subsequent drowning of the witches.

“It’s a movie we would all see when we were 10 – it’s just irreverent and abstract humor.”

Mr Depp added that Mr Bettany and Ms Heard’s relationship was “abhorrent” as she sees him as a “menace”.

He said: “Ms Heard despised Mr Bettany mainly because we had become such close friends and he was a threat to her and would take me away from her.”

Mr Depp has denied all allegations that he ever assaulted Ms Heard.

He told the court that after reading the Washington Post article for the first time, he felt like he had been “hit in the head with a two-by-four (piece of wood).”

Ms Heard is also expected to make a statement in the trial, which is expected to take a total of seven weeks.
