Hollywood star Johnny Depp took a stand in his $100 million defamation case, with his ex-wife insisting, “I myself never got to the point where I smacked Ms Heard in any way.”
The 58-year-old actor testified Tuesday as part of his civil defamation lawsuit against ex-wife Amber Heard in Fairfax, Virginia.
He told the jury about her abuse allegations he inflicted here that it had been “six years of difficult times.”
“It’s very strange when one day you’re like Cinderella and 0.6 seconds later you’re Quasimodo,” he said.
“I didn’t deserve that, my children and the people who believed in me all these years didn’t. I didn’t want any of those people to think I wronged them or that I was a scammer.
“I pride myself on honesty. I’m proud of the truth. Truth is the only thing I’m interested in. Lies will get you nowhere, but lies build on lies that build on lies.
“Today is the first day that I can speak about this case for the first time.”
When asked how he was doing about making his private life public, he said: “As a father raising kids, you know when they were very, very little it was important to me, very important to me to try to protect my children as much as possible from seeing their father or mother as novelties. I didn’t want her in front of hordes of paparazzi.
“I’ve always been a private person.
“So it’s quite revealing that I come here and stand in front of you all and tell the truth and it’s unfortunate that it exposes not just myself but my family and Miss Heard as well.
“It never had to go in that direction. So I can’t say I’m embarrassed because I know I’m doing the right thing.”
Depp is suing Heard for more than £38million and says her domestic violence lawsuits have damaged his career and reputation.
The 35-year-old actress has filed a counterclaim against Depp, 58, seeking nearly £78million in damages and says her legal team falsely accused her of fabricating claims against the actor.
Heard’s countersuit alleges Depp organized a “defamation campaign” against her and described his lawsuit as a continuation of “abuse and harassment.”
